Raised in South Texas, James graduated from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi before commissioning into the United States Marine Corps. After completing flight school and earning his wings of gold, he served as a helicopter pilot and drone operator while stationed in Hawaii for 8 years. Following his active duty service, which concluded in 2020, he transitioned into the mortgage industry, originating loans and selling new construction homes. He has since returned to the mortgage business with Legacy Mutual Mortgage.

He and his wife, Alexandra, are proud parents of five children. They volunteer their time with organizations like Young Life, and James enjoys coaching and watching his children participate in sports, golfing, hunting, or having a great dinner party with close friends.
